Is this the oldest One-Design class?
The Howth 17 class has never been stronger. Another boat
commissioned this year brings the active fleet up to 18
boats. The oldest and newest boats in the fleet regularly
fight for line- honours.

JULY 2009 SQUIB NATIONALS. WEYMOUTH.
THE FLYING HOGANS!
Chris and Mark Hogan win another Squib title, wrapping
up the National Chaampionships with a last-race win and
discarding a fifth. Alan Johnsson and Dave Garliock were
worthy runners-up.
With a 108-boat fleet and unsteady winds for most of the
week, this was a truly emphatic performance
BATT SAILS proved unbeatable all week, winning every race.
Coping brillantly with the mixed conditions, they were used
by every boat in the top seven

Melbourne. 2009.
Royal Victoria Yacht Club.
Barry Parkin and Tim Hall are runners-up in the 2009 Flying
Fifteen World Championships.
Going into the final heat they were level on points with
Australian Grant Alderson. An intense final race saw the
title go to Alderson by a single point when the two boats
scored 3rd and 4th.
In his last five National and International events Parkin,
who won this title in 2005, has scored 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd,
2nd. Consistency of the highest order and a great advert
for BATT sails

WINNING LARKS FOLLOWTHE MASTERS> HAYLING ISLAND SAILNG
CLUB
Martin Orton and Ian Brookes teamed up again for the LARK
Class Masters event at HISC at the weekend.
They showed great speed in the prevailing condition, scoring
1,2,2 to win the Open Meeting on the Sunday against the
current crop of fast LARK sailors.
The latest BATT 'LARK' sails are a direct development of
these same sails, which are still clearly still potent even
in the best company the Class can muster.

Quote of the week:
"Many thanks again for cutting a new jib
for Fireball 6. I'm very pleased to report that my pointing ability
improved (although inevitably always hindered by a wide sheeting
angle) and that we were the first 'classic' (i.e. vintage) boat
at the Peter Milne Memorial Open.Ê Amusingly (for me at any rate)
we actually beat some modern boats (14,000+ sail numbers) over
the water in both races despite an absence of trapeze and spinnaker.
Kind regards. Chris

News
from Batt Control---------
Projects
currently in the design house includedetail work on the
new rig for the international 14. Mirror 10 racing sails
are getting 'the treatment' and the new crosscut spinnaker
design has been signed off. The next phases of Flying Fifteen
and X.O.D development are almost ready for the 2009 season
Other
classes which received a design review and update over the
winter include the Albacore, National 18, GP14 and the Dublin
Bay IDRA 14. . Some classes, e.g. the Swallow and Squib,
have been reviewed and no changes to the successful core
design made this year, although the detailing on these sail
has been kept up to date with the current style.
Our
policy is not to change for changes' sake.

"Simply messing about in boats........."
This shot was taken on the Thames within a mile of
where Graham wrote 'The Wind in the Willows'. It shows
Pat Hobbs on early sea trials in his new creation,
a rowing/sailing river skiff. Sail by Batt, of course.

XOD Development bears fruit
|
Peter Baines won Cowes Week 2006
with a nine point lead over his closest rival after the
final race was cancelled for lack of wind. The Friday race
was won by Adrian Summers in Selix II, also using a complete
suit of the latest Batt sails.
Peter took delivery of his new Batt
mainsail and jib in mid July, to add to the Batt spinnaker
he already had. He won the first two races of Skandia Cowes
Week by convincing margins.
At the recent Southern Area champs hosted
by HRSC, Baines won the title with Itchenor's Alan Perry
a solid second overall. In this event Peter used Batt jib
and spinnaker, Alan set a Batt mainsail and Batt jib.

CHICHESTER SNOWFLAKE
Merlin Rockets
again showed the way in this keenly fought frostbite series,
which attracts top sailors from all over the South of England.
In extremes of weather the versatile Merlins have proved their
all-round pedigree . William Warren proved uncatchable at the
head of the leader board..
Why
are we telling you this?
Because
they both choose Batt sails to give their Merlins that little
bit of extra winning magic .

A
SHETLAND MAID
:
Crusader is shown
off the isle of Whalsay on her way to another win in an
amazing five year career in the hands of owner/skipper Laurence
Irvine and crew.
Not many of you
will guess that she is a Shetland Model Boat, or 'Maid'.
These fascinating boats race only in the Shetlands, to rules
honed over more than a century. Three man crew, no spinnaker,
wooden keel, no centreboard, double- ended. They vary a
bit in size, a lot in shape. They race on a handicap system
that sees the boats rated into starting groups for persuit
racing. First past the post wins.
