PROJECT FILE. Optimist Sails for the VOLVO Ocean Race

At each stopover of the VOLVO Ocean Race, the Race organisers provided team racing for local children in Optimist dinghies. Two complete sets of boats were created with four boats per team and one team per VOLVO Race entry and these were shipped ahead of the VOLVO Ocean Race fleet to be ready in port when the Race fleet arrived. Logistics meant that two fleets of Optimists were needed to stay ahead of the Ocean race. One in use and the other in transit to the next stopover.
THE BRIEF:
Batt Sails Limited were commissioned to create the uniquely-coloured sails to make best use of the promotional, cultural and educational opportunity this in-port team racing offered.
Some 90 sails were produced including spares, each one conforming precisely to the Class rules and each one coloured in the style of one of the VOLVO Ocean Race yachts.
We are proud of the fact that these same sails have now served for two VOLVO Ocean Races in succession, a truly impressive record of reliability and an impressive statement of style and design
